Tirostu Ingredients and Usage

Tirostu 12.5mg/50ml contains tirofiban hydrochloride, a glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist. This drug class stops platelets from clumping together inside narrowed arteries. Acute coronary syndrome is a sudden drop in blood flow to the heart muscle.

Doctors prescribe Tirostu for acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation, including unstable angina and a non ST elevation heart attack. Tirostu lowers the risk of death, repeat heart attack, and further cardiac procedures in these patients. Cardiologists also use Tirostu during percutaneous coronary intervention, a procedure that opens blocked heart arteries.

Tirostu suits patients with recent chest pain and abnormal ECG changes or raised cardiac enzymes. The injection works alongside aspirin and heparin as part of standard hospital treatment.

How Does Tirostu Work?

Tirostu works by blocking the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor on the surface of platelets. This receptor normally binds fibrinogen, the protein that links platelets together into a clot. Tirofiban occupies the receptor reversibly, so platelets cannot bind to each other.

As a result, Tirostu prevents new clots from forming inside diseased coronary arteries. The drug achieves over 90 percent inhibition of platelet aggregation during the recommended infusion. This action keeps blood flowing through the heart during unstable angina and coronary procedures.

Platelet function returns toward normal within a few hours after the infusion stops, because the binding reverses.

Tirostu Side Effects

Tirostu can cause side effects, with bleeding the most common and serious concern. Most bleeding occurs at the artery access site used during cardiac procedures.

  • Bleeding at the artery puncture or injection site

  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)

  • Leg or pelvic pain

  • Sweating

Warnings

  • Do not use Tirostu in patients with active internal bleeding or a known bleeding disorder.

  • Avoid Tirostu after major surgery, severe trauma, or stroke within the previous month.

  • Tirostu is contraindicated in patients who developed thrombocytopenia after earlier tirofiban use.

  • Combining Tirostu with warfarin, heparin, or other antiplatelet drugs raises the risk of bleeding.

  • Reduce the Tirostu dose in patients with severe kidney impairment, since clearance falls.

  • Monitor platelet counts within six hours of starting Tirostu and daily during treatment.

Tirostu Storage Conditions

Store Tirostu 12.5mg/50ml at controlled room temperature near 25°C, with brief excursions allowed between 15°C and 30°C. Protect the vial from light by keeping it inside the original carton until use. Do not freeze Tirostu, since freezing damages the solution.

Keep the injection out of reach of children and discard any unused portion safely. Hospital pharmacy staff should store and prepare Tirostu under sterile conditions before infusion.
