Temorel 100mg Capsules Ingredients and Usage
Temorel 100mg Capsules contain temozolomide, an oral alkylating agent. Alkylating agents are chemotherapy drugs that damage the DNA of cancer cells to stop them dividing. Doctors prescribe Temorel for newly diagnosed glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive brain tumour, alongside radiotherapy.
Temorel also treats refractory anaplastic astrocytoma and malignant glioma that returns after standard treatment. Doses are set by body surface area and given in cycles, usually for five days every 28 days. Patients swallow Temorel whole on an empty stomach to reduce nausea.
How Does Temorel 100mg Capsules Work?
Temorel works as a prodrug, meaning the body converts it into its active form, MTIC, after it is absorbed. MTIC attaches methyl groups to the DNA inside cancer cells, mainly at the guanine bases. This chemical damage stops the cancer cells from copying their DNA.
Temozolomide crosses the blood brain barrier, the protective filter around the brain, which lets it reach brain tumours directly. Once the DNA damage builds up, the cancer cells cannot divide and they die. This targeted DNA damage slows the growth of glioblastoma and astrocytoma.
Temorel 100mg Capsules Side Effects
Temorel commonly causes nausea and vomiting, which doctors control with antiemetic medicines. Most side effects are mild to moderate and ease between cycles.
Nausea and vomiting
Fatigue
Headache
Constipation or loss of appetite
Low platelet and white blood cell counts
Hair loss
Difficulty sleeping
Warnings
Temorel can suppress the bone marrow, lowering platelets and white cells, so doctors check blood counts before and during each cycle.
Temorel raises the risk of Pneumocystis pneumonia, a serious lung infection, so patients on radiotherapy receive preventive antibiotics.
Temorel can cause severe and sometimes fatal liver damage, so doctors monitor liver function throughout treatment.
Long or intensive treatment can rarely lead to secondary cancers such as myelodysplastic syndrome and leukemia.
Temorel can harm the fetus, so patients must avoid pregnancy and use contraception during and after treatment.
Swallow Temorel capsules whole and never open or chew them, as the powder inside can irritate skin and airways.
Temorel 100mg Capsules Storage Conditions
Store Temorel capsules below 25°C in a dry place, away from moisture, heat, and direct light. Keep the capsules in their original sealed pack to protect them from humidity until use. Store Temorel out of the reach of children, and do not use any capsule past its printed expiry date.
