Overview

Pharmatraxate 2.5mg is an oral prescription medication containing Methotrexate. It is widely prescribed in Pakistan for the management of severe active rheumatoid arthritis, severe psoriasis that does not respond to other treatments, and certain oncological conditions.

Key Benefits of Pharmatraxate

  • Helps reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

  • Slows down the progression of joint damage in inflammatory joint diseases.

  • Controls the rapid growth of skin cells to clear severe psoriasis plaques.

  • Acts as an effective disease-modifying antirheumatic drug for long-term management.

  • Serves as an essential therapeutic option in various oncology treatment protocols.

Pharmatraxate Ingredients and Usage

Pharmatraxate contains Methotrexate, which belongs to the class of medicines known as antimetabolites and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs). It is primarily used to treat severe, active rheumatoid arthritis in adults when other first-line treatments have not been sufficiently effective.

It is also indicated for the control of severe, recalcitrant, disabling psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in adults who do not respond adequately to conventional therapies. Additionally, in the field of oncology, it is used to treat various neoplastic diseases, including acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and certain solid tumours.

How Does Pharmatraxate Work?

Methotrexate works by interfering with the growth of certain cells in the body, especially cells that reproduce rapidly, such as cancer cells, skin cells in psoriasis, and immune cells that cause joint inflammation. By inhibiting specific enzymes involved in DNA synthesis and cell replication, it helps suppress the overactive immune response and reduce tissue inflammation.

How to Use Pharmatraxate

Pharmatraxate 2.5mg tablets are taken orally. It is crucial to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor, as it is often taken on a weekly schedule rather than daily for inflammatory conditions.

The tablets can be taken with or without food, but taking them with water at the same time on your designated day helps maintain consistent levels in the body.

Never alter your dose or stop taking this medication without consulting your healthcare provider. Regular blood tests are required to monitor your body's response to the treatment.

Pharmatraxate Side Effects

Like all medicines, Pharmatraxate 2.5mg can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any new, unusual, or worsening symptoms.

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Loss of appetite

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort

  • Mild hair loss or thinning

  • Mouth ulcers or soreness

  • Headache and dizziness

Warnings

  • Methotrexate can cause serious liver, lung, or kidney damage, requiring regular monitoring by your physician.

  • This medication can severely suppress bone marrow activity, leading to low blood cell counts.

  • It can cause severe birth defects or fetal death, and must never be used during pregnancy.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV rays, as this medicine can make your skin highly sensitive to light.

Precautions and Who Should Avoid It

  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, kidney impairment, lung disorders, or blood disorders.

  • Both male and female patients must use highly effective contraception during treatment and for several months after stopping the medication.

  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine as it can pass into breast milk and harm the nursing infant.

  • Discuss your vaccination status with your doctor, as live vaccines should be avoided during treatment.

  • Limit or completely avoid alcohol consumption, as it significantly increases the risk of severe liver damage.

Drug and Food Interactions

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin can increase the levels of Methotrexate in your blood, raising the risk of toxicity.

  • Certain antibiotics, such as penicillins and sulfonamides, can interfere with how your kidneys clear this medicine.

  • Proton pump inhibitors used for acid reflux may increase Methotrexate levels and should be used with caution.

  • Folic acid supplements can affect how this medicine works, so they must only be taken under your doctor's specific guidance.

Pharmatraxate Storage Conditions

Store Pharmatraxate 2.5mg tablets in their original packaging to protect them from light and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed and store it as directed on the product label, away from direct heat and sunlight. Always keep this medication out of the reach and sight of children.
