Trexate Ingredients and Usage

Trexate 10mg Tablet contains methotrexate, a folic acid antagonist from the antimetabolite drug class. Rheumatologists prescribe it for severe rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis that has not responded to other disease modifying drugs.

Gastroenterologists also use Trexate off label for Crohn disease, while oncologists include it in chemotherapy regimens for leukemia, lymphoma, and breast cancer. Patients usually take Trexate once weekly, and the effect on inflammation can appear within one to two hours of a dose.

How Does Trexate Work?

Methotrexate inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, an enzyme the body needs to produce tetrahydrofolate. Tetrahydrofolate supplies the building blocks for purine and pyrimidine synthesis, which cells use to build new DNA and RNA.

By blocking this enzyme, Trexate slows the rapid division of immune cells that drive joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and skin cell overgrowth in psoriatic arthritis. In cancer treatment, the same mechanism halts the growth of malignant cells.

Trexate Side Effects

Trexate affects fast growing cells throughout the body, so side effects commonly involve the digestive tract, liver, and blood counts. Tell your doctor promptly if any symptom becomes severe.

Warnings

• Avoid Trexate in active infections or significant blood disorders such as anemia

• Drink plenty of fluids during therapy to help protect the kidneys

• Avoid alcohol, as it raises the risk of liver toxicity

Trexate Storage Conditions

Store Trexate 10mg Tablet below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tablets in their original blister pack until use, and keep the pack out of reach of children. Do not use tablets beyond the printed expiry date.
