Rocephin 1gm for intramuscular (I.M.) injection contains Ceftriaxone Sodium. This broad-spectrum antibiotic is clinically indicated for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including gonorrhea, pelvic inflammatory disease, and lower respiratory tract infections. It is also used for bacterial meningitis and surgical prophylaxis. The I.M. version often comes with Lidocaine as a solvent to reduce the pain associated with a large-volume injection into the muscle. How Does Rocephin 1gm I.M. Vial Work?

Ceftriaxone works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It binds to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall. This binding prevents the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains, which are essential for the structural integrity of the wall. Without a functional cell wall, the bacteria become unstable and eventually undergo osmotic lysis (bursting). This bactericidal action is effective against a wide variety of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Rocephin 1gm I.M. Vial Side Effects

Common side effects include pain or tenderness at the injection site, diarrhea, and nausea. Some patients may experience skin rash or eosinophilia. Less common but serious side effects include pseudomembranous colitis (severe intestinal inflammation) and biliary "sludge" or stones, particularly in pediatric patients.

List of Warnings:

• Contraindicated in neonates (under 28 days) who require treatment with calcium-containing IV solutions.
