NovoMix 30 FlexPen Ingredients and Usage
NovoMix 30 FlexPen contains biphasic insulin aspart, a premixed human insulin analogue made by Novo Nordisk. Biphasic means the pen holds two insulin forms that act at different speeds. It combines 30% rapid acting soluble insulin aspart with 70% intermediate acting protamine crystallised insulin aspart.
Doctors prescribe NovoMix 30 FlexPen for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and it suits patients from 10 years of age. Inject it under the skin of the thigh, abdomen, upper arm, or buttock, usually just before a meal. Roll and tip the pen gently to resuspend the insulin before each dose.
How Does NovoMix 30 FlexPen Work?
NovoMix 30 FlexPen lowers blood sugar by binding insulin receptors on muscle and fat cells. This binding drives glucose out of the blood into cells and blocks glucose release from the liver. Insulin aspart carries a swapped amino acid at position B28, which speeds its absorption from the skin.
The soluble 30% fraction starts working within 10 to 20 minutes and peaks between 1 and 4 hours. The protamine crystallised 70% fraction releases slowly, mirroring the profile of human NPH insulin. Together they cover the meal and the hours that follow from one injection.
NovoMix 30 FlexPen Side Effects
NovoMix 30 FlexPen most commonly causes hypoglycemia, meaning low blood sugar, which affects more than 1 in 10 users. Treat mild lows with fast carbohydrate and tell your doctor about frequent episodes.
Hypoglycemia (shaking, sweating, confusion, hunger)
Injection site pain, redness, swelling, or itching
Lipodystrophy (skin lumps or pits from repeated injections in one spot)
Weight gain
Peripheral edema (fluid swelling), usually at treatment start
Temporary blurred vision when therapy begins
Allergic reactions such as rash, rarely severe
Warnings
Do not use NovoMix 30 FlexPen during a hypoglycemic episode or if you are allergic to insulin aspart.
Missing doses or stopping suddenly can trigger high blood sugar and diabetic ketoacidosis, especially in Type 1 diabetes.
Rotate injection sites within the same area to lower the risk of skin thickening and lipodystrophy.
Combining insulin with pioglitazone can raise the risk of heart failure, so watch for swelling and breathlessness.
Hypoglycemia can impair concentration, which affects driving and operating machinery.
Never freeze the pen, do not mix it with other insulins, and never share a pen or needle.
NovoMix 30 FlexPen Storage Conditions
Store unopened NovoMix 30 FlexPen in a refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C, away from the cooling element, and keep the cap on to protect it from light.
