Gefaget 45mg Ingredients and Usage

Gefaget 45mg Tablet contains Gefapixant Citrate as its active ingredient. Gefapixant belongs to a new class of medicines called P2X3 receptor antagonists. It is the first novel oral therapy approved for chronic cough in nearly 60 years.

Doctors prescribe Gefaget 45mg for adults with refractory chronic cough (RCC) or unexplained chronic cough (UCC). Refractory chronic cough is a cough lasting more than 8 weeks that does not improve after treatment of underlying causes. Unexplained chronic cough is a persistent cough with no identifiable medical cause after thorough evaluation.

Gefaget 45mg is usually taken twice daily, with or without food, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It improves cough frequency, sleep quality, and daily comfort in adults who struggle with persistent coughing.

How Does Gefaget 45mg Work?

Gefaget 45mg targets the P2X3 receptor, a protein found on sensory nerve fibres in the airway. P2X3 receptors are activated by extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) released during airway irritation or inflammation. This activation triggers the cough reflex through vagal afferent nerves connected to the brainstem.

Gefapixant blocks these P2X3 receptors and reduces the hypersensitive cough response. The medicine acts on peripheral sensory nerves rather than directly suppressing the brain. As a result, Gefaget 45mg lowers cough frequency without the sedation linked to older cough suppressants.

Gefapixant reaches peak blood levels within 1 to 2 hours of oral dosing. The kidneys excrete most of the active drug, so dose adjustment may be needed in renal impairment.

Gefaget 45mg can cause side effects, with taste disturbances being the most commonly reported in clinical trials. Up to 69% of patients experience some form of taste disturbance at the 45mg dose, although most cases are mild and reversible after stopping the medicine.
