Ernem Ingredients and Usage

The active ingredient is Ertapenem Sodium, a beta-lactam carbapenem antibiotic. The 1gm vial is reconstituted and administered as a single daily dose by intravenous infusion over 30 minutes or intramuscular injection.

Ernem is clinically indicated for:

• Complicated intra-abdominal infections
• Complicated skin and skin structure infections
• Community-acquired pneumonia
• Complicated urinary tract infections
• Acute pelvic infections including endometritis

How Does Ernem Work?

Ernem provides bactericidal action through cell wall synthesis inhibition:

1. Cell Wall Synthesis Inhibition: Binds to penicillin-binding proteins disrupting bacterial cell wall formation
2. Bactericidal Activity: Causes bacterial cell death through osmotic instability
3. Broad Spectrum Coverage: Effective against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
4. Beta-Lactamase Stability: Resistant to hydrolysis by many beta-lactamase enzymes

Ernem Side Effects and Warnings

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, headache, injection site reactions, and vaginitis. Most adverse effects are mild to moderate in severity.

Serious Considerations

1. Seizure Risk: May cause seizures especially in patients with CNS disorders or renal impairment
2. Hypersensitivity Reactions: Cross-reactivity possible in penicillin-allergic patients
3. C.difficile Diarrhea: May cause antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis
4. Drug Interactions: Probenecid competes with renal tubular secretion
5. Renal Impairment: Dose adjustment required in patients with renal dysfunction

Ernem Storage Conditions

Ernem Injection requires proper storage and handling:

• Store unreconstituted vials at room temperature below 25°C
• Protect from light and moisture
• Use reconstituted solution immediately or refrigerate for up to 24 hours
• Do not freeze reconstituted solution
• Discard unused portions appropriately
