Cefcom Ingredients and Usage

The active ingredients are Cefoperazone Sodium and Sulbactam Sodium in 1:1 ratio. The 1g powder requires reconstitution before intravenous or intramuscular administration.

Cefcom is clinically indicated for:

• Severe respiratory tract infections
• Intra-abdominal infections and peritonitis
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Urinary tract infections and septicemia

How Does Cefcom Work?

Cefcom combines bactericidal activity with beta-lactamase protection:

1. Cell Wall Synthesis Inhibition: Cefoperazone binds to penicillin-binding proteins
2. Beta-Lactamase Protection: Sulbactam inactivates bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes
3. Extended Spectrum: Covers Gram-positive, Gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria
4. Biliary Excretion: High concentration achieved in bile and liver

Cefcom Side Effects and Warnings

Common side effects include diarrhea, injection site reactions, rash, and transient liver enzyme elevations. Most reactions are mild and self-limiting.

Serious Considerations

1. Hypersensitivity Reactions: Cross-reactivity possible in penicillin-allergic patients
2. Bleeding Risk: May cause hypoprothrombinemia and bleeding - monitor prothrombin time
3. Disulfiram-like Reaction: Avoid alcohol during and 72 hours after treatment
4. Renal/Hepatic Impairment: Dose adjustment needed in severe organ dysfunction
5. Superinfection Risk: May cause antibiotic-associated colitis
