Calcium Gluconate Ingredients and Usage

Calcium Gluconate provides supplemental calcium for conditions where blood calcium levels fall dangerously low or rapid replacement is required. It is administered slowly via intravenous injection to restore calcium levels safely and effectively.

It is clinically indicated for the treatment of:

  • Hypocalcemia: Acute symptomatic calcium deficiency
  • Cardiac Arrest Due to Hyperkalemia: Stabilizes cardiac cell membranes
  • Magnesium Toxicity: Reverses the effects of magnesium overdose
  • Tetany and Muscle Spasms: Calcium deficiency-related neuromuscular symptoms
  • Calcium Channel Blocker Overdose: Supportive emergency therapy

Serious Warnings and Precautions

  1. Extravasation Risk: Calcium gluconate can cause severe tissue necrosis if accidentally injected outside the vein.
  2. Cardiac Effects: Rapid IV administration may cause bradycardia, arrhythmias, or cardiac arrest.
  3. Hypercalcemia: Excessive dosing can cause dangerously high calcium levels, leading to confusion, irregular heartbeat, or kidney injury.
  4. Drug Interactions: Avoid co-administration with medications such as ceftriaxone in neonates due to precipitation risk.
  5. Renal Impairment: Dose adjustment may be required in patients with kidney dysfunction.
