Fortazim Ingredients and Usage

The active ingredient is Ceftazidime Pentahydrate, a beta-lactam cephalosporin antibiotic. The 1g vial is reconstituted and administered by deep intramuscular injection or intravenous infusion every 8-12 hours, depending on infection severity.

Fortazim is clinically indicated for:

  • Serious infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Complicated urinary tract infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections including pneumonia
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Septicemia and meningitis

How Does Fortazim Work?

Fortazim provides bactericidal action through bacterial cell wall disruption:

  1. Cell Wall Synthesis Inhibition: Binds to penicillin-binding proteins in bacterial cell walls
  2. Bactericidal Activity: Causes bacterial cell death by disrupting cell wall integrity
  3. Broad Spectrum Coverage: Particularly effective against gram-negative bacteria
  4. Pseudomonal Activity: Maintains excellent activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Fortazim Side Effects and Warnings

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, and injection site reactions. Most adverse effects are mild and self-limiting.

Serious Considerations

  1. Hypersensitivity Reactions: Cross-reactivity possible in penicillin-allergic patients
  2. C.difficile Diarrhea: May cause antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis
  3. Renal Impairment: Dose adjustment required in patients with renal dysfunction
  4. Seizure Risk: May cause seizures especially in patients with renal impairment
  5. Superinfection: Prolonged use may result in fungal or bacterial superinfection

Fortazim Storage Conditions

Fortazim Injection requires proper storage conditions:

  • Store unreconstituted vials below 25°C
