Ecavir Ingredients and Usage

The active ingredient is Entecavir, a guanosine nucleoside analogue. The 0.5mg tablet is taken once daily on an empty stomach at least 2 hours before or after food.

Ecavir is clinically indicated for:

  • Chronic hepatitis B virus infection in adults
  • HBV replication-active liver disease
  • Treatment-naïve patients with compensated liver disease
  • Patients with elevated HBV DNA and ALT levels

How Does Ecavir Work?

Ecavir provides potent antiviral activity through selective HBV polymerase inhibition:

  1. HBV Polymerase Inhibition: Competitively inhibits HBV reverse transcriptase
  2. DNA Chain Termination: Incorporates into viral DNA causing chain termination
  3. Viral Suppression: Reduces HBV DNA to undetectable levels
  4. High Genetic Barrier: Low rate of resistance development

Ecavir Side Effects and Warnings

Common side effects include headache, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea. Most reactions are mild and transient.

Serious Considerations

  1. Lactic Acidosis: Risk of severe lactic acidosis with hepatic steatosis
  2. Hepatitis Exacerbation: Acute severe exacerbation upon discontinuation
  3. Renal Impairment: Dose adjustment required in kidney dysfunction
  4. HIV Coinfection: May select for HIV resistance if undiagnosed
  5. Treatment Duration: Long-term therapy usually required
